Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation programs are developed by K9 SWiM for your dog to gain the maximum benefits of canine hydrotherapy. Here are just some of the conditions which hydrotherapy is used for rehabilitation:
- Pre and post surgery recovery
- Muscle development
- Arthritis
- Disabled dogs
- Ageing dogs
- Orthopaedic/Musculoskeletal conditions
- Limited range of motion, flexibility and balance
- Hip/Elbow Dysplasia
- Cruciate ligament injury/disease
- Luxating patella
We will liaise with your Vet prior to your dog’s session and during their rehabilitation process. Health checks are carried out prior to your dog’s swim and for certain conditions we shall measure and monitor muscle mass during their rehabilitation program.
When NOT to swim your dog
Hydrotherapy is NOT recommended if your dog has any of the following conditions:
- Open wounds
- Heart condition/disease
- Bitches in season
- Pulmonary disease
- Infectious or contagious conditions such as gastric upsets, kennel cough, ear, eye or skin infections
Canine Underwater Treadmill
Hydrotherapy sessions with the Canine Underwater Treadmill provide resistance and buoyancy, which alleviates the pressure off your dog’s limbs and joints. The reduced weight-bearing load increases the functional use of their limbs. The warm water used in the treadmill helps reduce pain and inflammation, which can also make connective tissue more flexible and increase blood and oxygen in muscles. Programs are specifically designed for your dog’s condition to gain the maximum benefits such as:
- Conditioning and fitness
- Improve blood circulation
- Improve cardiovascular system
- Improve range of motion
- Improve stability and balance
- Increase muscle mass and strength
- Post-surgery recovery
- Reducing injury recovery time
- Assists in correcting abnormal gait
Indoor Heated Pool
Non-weight bearing conditions are treated in the pool, as the floatation supports the entire body weight and the limbs move freely without the “jarring” effect of exercising on hard ground. It allows those dogs with paralysis to neutralise their spine, stretch out, be buoyant and wonderful for mental stimulation. The pool is great for cardiovascular fitness, weight loss and endurance and conditioning. Sessions are usually 15 minutes. The frequency of swims and length of the program will depend on your dog’s health and condition.
Jet Spa
The jet spa is designed for small dogs 10kgs and under to swim in a warm bubbling spa with resistant jets so they swim against a current. The minerals in the swim spa relax their muscles and give them an overall feeling of well being. The Jet Spa aids in:
- Relaxing muscles and tendons
- Promoting good circulation
- Assists in stiffness and arthritic conditions
- Great cardiovascular workout
- Perfect for small dogs that don’t like the pool and prefer a smaller space
Fitness
Dogs don’t need to have a medical condition to come to us. Hydrotherapy is a wonderful cross training, non-stress exercise to condition, tone and build stamina as well as a whole lot of fun! Swimming is great for your dog’s health and well being no matter what their level of fitness is.
Did you know that 5 minutes of swimming for a dog is equivalent to a 5km run?
Canine Weight Loss Program
Our 6 week canine weight loss program is designed to get the pounds off your pooches. The program is an ongoing, individual program designed to get your dog safely to its ideal weight. An exercise and diet program will be tailored for your dog on your first visit. Included in the program:
- Weekly weigh ins
- Health checks
- Information on weight loss
- Muscle mass measurements
Our successful Canine Weight Loss program was showcased and featured by Dr Harry on Better Homes & Gardens. What a thrill it was for us all to have Dr Harry come and join us at K9 SWiM.
Training and Conditioning Program
If your dog competes in agility, fly ball, shows, dock dogs or any other sport, this is a wonderful strengthening exercise for them.
Seniors Program
Your dog is never too old to swim. Hydrotherapy allows older dogs to get out and exercise as well as providing mental stimulation. This is a group program that goes for 6 weeks. The Seniors Program provides gentle exercise to strengthen older dogs over 10 years of age and keeps them fit. The Seniors Program includes:
- Weekly swims in our indoor heated pool
